FULL MOON and the TIDES
DelMar is a beach track. This year, there will be a full moon occurring on Friday November 1st.
High tides over 7ft will occur during the 9am hour on both days which will have an affect throughout the day on the dirt surface.
As is the normal case at DelMar, the track is extremely fast but even more so with a full moon and higher than normal tides because of that full moon. It affects the ground from underneath which generally aids speed and lead tier competitors.
This will enhance the speedy types on the lead or close to the lead a great deal and those who are equipped to go "the extra distance" while exerting more early energy will capitalize to a much higher extent.
They will find greater ease on this type of ground and those who have inherited the proper stamina to sustain that faster pace will always capture that advantage.
On the flip side, while it does produce higher than normal speeds, it could ultimately steal too much early energy from those who are not holding the proper stamina back-up.
With the full moon occurring during the Juvenile races, the most important aspect will be to define the lead tier with their endurance inheritance. They will be more apt to go faster than they have shown up to this date and must be capable of exerting more energy early while keeping their endurance intact.
The tides will have an affect on the race results this year. The early undercard races will show the extent and will slightly taper throughout the day.
It is very important to note that while we may think that those who train and have raced at DelMar may have a bit of an advantage with location, some coming from overseas will also feel right at home.
For instance, Niigata Race track is located alongside the Japan Sea. Others like Chukyo, Kokura, and Nakayama are fairly close as well but not quite as close. Other TURF tracks like Dundolk and Leopardstown are also sitting alongside the sea. For this reason, you should not discount the overseas runners based on the bias and assume that advantage goes to only the one side. That would be a mistake, regardless of turf or dirt.
