2027 Derby Prep Winners - Part One

9/12/2026 IROQUOIS STAKES - Churchill Downs

SALAHUDIN Race Results 8f cloudy/fast Final Time: 1:36.54

DP = 7-15-20-0-0 (42) DI = 3.20   CD = 0.69

Mare Profile = 8-3-5-8-7   Speed = 11   Stamina = 15   Index = 0.89   Triads = 16-16-20

Uncle Mo - Weekend Strike (Smart Strike) Bob Baffert Jockey: Joes Ortiz

St. Simon: 12.50%

Old: 5-5-8-0-0 (18) D.I. = 3.50 CD = 0.83

Historical Kentucky Derby Alignment:  ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

  • Treading lightly for the time being between the new configurations vs the old this early on the trail. The addition of Uncle Mo (I,C) in the first generation and In Excess (B,I) and Arch (C) in 3rd generations highly affect the total points in the profile which before would have been a highlight last year but I am wary of it this year. The cut in the CD is large but not dramatic because In Excess offsets a bit. Based on the bad break and the way that Salahudin came from the rear was flattering as he is now undefeated in 3 races with the first 2 traveling closer up front. The mares numbers are not perfect but still offer the proper alignment. He does look a nice prospect for Keeneland for the Juvenile but stablemate Hughes looks even better. Would advise to take a step back off of Baffert's clan this early in the game for Derby prospect outside of the Into Mischief's. You just never know how their careers will ultimately unfold.

9/26/2026  JUDDMONTE ROYAL LODGE - New Market

HAFFNER  Race Replay        1600 meters - approx 8f Turf Final Time: 1:35.44

DP = DP = 2-8-10-0-0 (20) DI = 3.00   CD = 0.60

Mare Profile = 10-3-5-9-8   Speed = 13   Stamina = 17   Index = 0.93   Triads = 18-17-22

Justify - Earth Strike (Zoffany) Aiden O'Brien Jockey: Ryan Moore

Historical Kentucky Derby Alignment: TURF

  • Eighth win for Aiden O'brien in this race. Looking for another golden Justify colt but hard-pressed to stike twice as he did with the incomparable City of Troy. May be headed to Keeneland for the Breeder's Cup Juvenile Turf.

9/26/2026 Beresford Stakes - Curragh

NOBLE EXHIBIT   Race Replay        1600 meters - approx 8f Turf Final Time: 1:41.53

DP = 1-1-9-7-0 (18) DI = 0.57   CD = -0.22

Mare Profile = 1-5-5-11-7   Speed = 6   Stamina = 18   Index = 0.40   Triads = 11-21-23

Frankel - Prize Exhibit (Showcasing) Aiden O'Brien Jockey: Wayne Lordan

Historical Kentucky Derby Alignment: TURF

  • Aiden O'Brien notches his 23rd win in this race and solidifies his title as the greatest turf trainer in the world, especially with 2 year olds. This Frankel boy took it gate to wire and looked powerful down the stretch. If Aiden brings two for the Juvenile Turf, this guy would be the pick. He'll be set on turf moving forward.

10/4/2025 AMERICAN PHAROAH STAKES - Santa Anita

HUGHES Race Results 8.5f Clear Fast Final Time: 1:43.22

DP = 8-1-11-0-0 (20) DI = 2.64   CD = 0.85

Mare Profile = 5-9-5-9-3   Speed = 14   Stamina = 12   Index = 1.20   Triads = 19-23-17

Into Mischief - K P Dreamin (Union Rags) Bob Baffert Jockey: Juan Hernadez

St. Simon: 33.2%

Old: 0-1-1-0-0 (2) Index = 3.00 CD = .50

Historical Kentucky Derby Alignment: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ +

  • Four wins with two in gate to wire fashion (his 6f maiden and the Best Pal) he now shows signs of ability to win with multiple styles - which is excellent. Typical Into Mischief mare set-up with a few points under in the last slot of the triads but still competitive with this set-up. Can't knock a winning Into Mischief son in terms of the Derby and he seems extremely well suited for success in the Juvenile. It's early in the game but with 4 wins under his belt already at this early stage and two of them at Grade One, hard to not like what is here. The 33.2% linebreeding to St. Simon is a stand-out.

 10/3/2026 CLAIBORNE BREEDERS FUTURITY - Keeneland

AMERICAN HISTORY Race Results 8.5f Clear Fast Final Time: 1:44.88

DP = 13-12-25-0-0 (50) DI = 3.00   CD = 0.76

Mare Profile = 8-8-3-6-4   Speed = 16   Stamina = 10   Index = 1.59   Triads = 19-17-13

Constitution - Bloody Point (War Front) Todd Pletcher Jockey: John Velazquez

St. Simon: 28.52%

Old: 2-7-7-0-0 (16) Index = 3.57 CD = 0.69

Historical Kentucky Derby Alignment:  ♥ ♥

  • The Pletcher/Velazquez combo strikes again this year in the Breeder's Futurity with Ted Noffey last year and American History this year. Big difference is that Ted is an Into Mischief son and American History is 2nd generation Tapit. He was off slow and came from behind in a noble effort in this race but no matter how high his profile points soared with the addition of Constitution and Tapit in his first two generations, the fact remains, the mares numbers are completely off for the Derby - but will be put on the backburner for a slight consideration at a 12f run at Belmont if he gets there.

10/3/2026 CHAMPAGNE STAKES - Belmont Park

U. S. S. VALOR Race Results 8f Clear Fast Final Time: 1:34.84

DP = 3-8-11-2-0 (24) DI = 2.20   CD = 0.50

Mare Profile = 7-6-2-11-2   Speed = 13   Stamina = 13   Index = 1.29   Triads = 15-19-15

War of Will - Spangled Banner (Tiz Wonderful) Shug McCaughey Jockey: Manny Franco

St. Simon: 34.96%

Old: 2-5-9-2-0 (18) Index = 1.77 CD = 0.39

Historical Kentucky Derby Alignment: ♥ ♥ ♥ +

  • Running style is killer with his numbers and looks the part for the trail. Chef side, both old and new, look very nice for his winning ways going short so far which could make him a stand-out, so monitoring this particular guy for an upgrade is definitely on the horizon. Slight knock with the mares split at 10f for the May race at Churchill though so the different biases moving forward will be very important for him (and us!). Looks to be a solid player for Breeders Weekend up against Hughes, depending on how that bias is playing.

10/4/2026 JEAN-LUC LAGARDERE - Longchamp

AMUSINGLY Race Replay about 7f Turf Final Time: 1:19.40

DP = 3-7-11-1-0 (22) DI = 2.38   CD = 0.55

Mare Profile = 8-4-4-7-9   Speed = 12   Stamina = 16   Index = 0.83   Triads = 16-15-20

No Nay Never - Joyeuse (Oasis Dream) Francis-Henri Grafford Jockey: Colin Keane

Historical Kentucky Derby Alignment: TURF

  • This filly beat a full field of boys on the short turf track and most likely will not be pointed anywhere near Churchill Downs in May. Would be one to look at closely if the connections make a trip for the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf because she has been highly tested with her win in this race.

10/24/2026 FUTURITY STAKES - Doncaster

10/25/2026 STREET SENSE - Churchill Downs

10/30/2016 BREEDERS CUP JUVENILE - Keeneland

Oh, good your back.

I was hoping to see 5+🖤 for Hughes.

Great way to follow the Derby trail.

Eventually he will probably get the 5+ stars but just like with Sovereignty (another Into Mischief son) I want to be cautious before going all in. One, his triads are great but not exceptional. Two, the Baffert Factor! But out of all on the leaderboard so far, he reigns supreme at the moment.

Glad you're back Lisa, and congrats on the upcoming book. Didn't know you were an artist too.

In this article you mention St. Simon several times. Last season you focued on the Ribot/Flower Bowl connection and I know Ribot is in the St. Simon line. Considering those horses ran longer races than are carded to day and, perhaps, stamina outweighed speed, how does St. Simon, 9 or so generations back, influence todays speed favoring horses?

USS Valor skipping the Breeders Cup. Sad news about Potente I recall you liked that horse for the Derby. Nice to hear from the Dirty Horse Club again.

Horribly sad. Potente was a very nice horse. Sometimes this sport can knock you down really hard.
