Funny you should post about Bill Benter. This is the very guy that I stumbled upon on the internet years ago and base much of my handicapping on - (besides the pedigree.) His algorithms consisted of certain criteria that had to be met to find the top players in the race. There are about 15 items that went into his algorithms which he had the capability of turning into a computer program which spit out the ideal horses for a given race within seconds.
Items like time between races, lbs carried at the same distance vs lbs of present race, jockey at the same distance, In the Money in previous, etc. etc.
I have to unpack a few more boxes and find my notes on all of the points and post it. I do believe I posted it once but it must have been back on the HRF-online website. Anyone who does not follow Benter's "algorithms" criteria is loosing out a great deal when it comes to handicapping. The guy was a genius with it and a living legend in horseracing gambling.
Actually, I disagree. It's an opportunity to get high odds on a horse(s) you like before most everyone else. I don't feel like doing the analysis, but some recent Derby winners had some decently long odds in the early wagering future pools. But it's definitely doesn't make sense to spend a lot.
I don't bet the futures anymore. I save that $$ for the first 3-5 weeks at Oaklawn, where I get the longshots. Better return on my money and I can actually see the horses in the paddocks before the race. I stopped betting the futures about 2 years ago. Good luck to everyone nevertheless!!

Derby futures are a waste of money. Half of the field won’t make it to the starting gate. Guess which half..lol
Great article
